The Historic Armstrong-Mauldin House, located at the corner of Aiken and College Avenues, is the clubhouse for the Woman's Club of Rock Hill. | The reconstructed pergola on the grounds of the Armstrong-Mauldin House is an exact replica of the one that once stood in the same location. According to the late James Cothran, ASLA, this pergola "represents one of the finest examples of high-style pergola constructed in the South during the American landscape period of 1880-1940, known as the Country Place Era." | |||
The club is the proud owner since 1971 of the Armstrong-Mauldin House in the Charlotte Avenue/Aiken Avenue Historic District which was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Built in 1921, the house serves as our clubhouse and is available to the public for weddings, receptions, meetings and other events. Major improvements were made to the house interior and exterior and landscaping was added for the Designer Showhouse in 2002. The club continues to enhance its property by launching a project to restore the formal gardens installed by the Mauldin family in the1930s. Plans are to rebuild the pergola, restore the reflecting pool and lily pond, add landscaping and make improvements to adjacent areas. At the same time, the club continues its many community projects implementing the programming guidelines of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. |
